Gait analysis examines how a person is walking or running. It may be necessary to look carefully at a person’s gait when they are experiencing certain symptoms in their feet, knees, hips or lower back. Abnormalities in gait can produce a number of problems that prevent the person from functioning normally. To diagnose the condition and therefore implement a suitable management plan, a thorough history is taken and examination is performed. This includes:
- A full medical and social history
- Details on levels of activity
- Examination of joints in the lower limb, both sitting and standing
- Observation of joints, muscles and tendons during walking and running
- A diagnosis and explanation of the problem
- Plan to treat the problem, for example orthoses
